The Project
Tadman Planning Consultants were instructed, in collaboration with Batterham Smith Architects, to support the conversion of a modern agricultural building to a dwelling within the Green Belt and designated National Landscape.
Although the proposal could not be pursued under Class Q permitted development, the planning case was structured around the established principle that the conversion of structurally sound agricultural buildings can be acceptable in policy terms. The building was demonstrated to be capable of conversion without substantial reconstruction, retaining its agricultural form and appearance to ensure that openness and rural character were preserved.
Particular attention was given to landscape impact, with the scheme designed to maintain the visual qualities of an agricultural barn within the National Landscape. In addition, the removal of a separate agricultural structure formed part of the overall strategy, resulting in a net improvement to openness.
Planning permission was granted and the clients were delighted with the outcome.
